How SSP works

If you are eligible you get £123.25 a week or 80% of your normal weekly earnings, whichever is lower, for up to 28 weeks. It is paid for the full days off sick that you would normally have worked, so this calculator splits the weekly amount across the days you normally work.

How to use it

  2. Enter how many days a week you normally work.
  3. Enter how many of those working days you are off sick.

FAQ

How much is Statutory Sick Pay?

If you are eligible, you get £123.25 a week or 80% of your normal weekly earnings, whichever is lower. It is paid for up to 28 weeks.

Who qualifies for SSP?

You must be classed as an employee, have done some work for your employer, and have been ill for at least one full working day. You will not qualify if you have already had 28 weeks of SSP or are getting Statutory Maternity Pay.

How is it worked out for each day?

SSP is paid for the full days off sick that you would normally have worked, so this calculator divides the weekly amount by the number of days you normally work each week.

How are average weekly earnings worked out?

Your employer uses your average weekly earnings over an 8-week period. Enter that average here for a close estimate.

What are linked periods of sickness?

Sickness periods that last more than one full working day and are 8 weeks or less apart are linked and count together towards the 28 weeks. A continuous series of linked periods lasting more than 3 years ends eligibility.

Is this calculator affiliated with the UK government?

No. It is an independent educational estimate. Your employer calculates your actual SSP, and tax and National Insurance are deducted from it.
